February is not only Black History Month, but also American Heart Month so we are taking the time to highlight cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of death in the United States. African Americans are 30 percent more likely to die from heart disease than White Americans.

YWCA South Florida Family Wellness Programs provide health education and prevention services, so that women and girls in our community have access to health care services and education that not available to communities of color.

In 2008, Barack Obama became the first African American to run for president on a major political party’s ticket. He then went on to become the first African American to be elected president of the United States. Obama ended two terms in January 2017, with a 60 percent approval rating, higher than most presidents at the end of their presidency. He and his wife, Michelle Obama, then started the Obama Foundation to provide mentoring and education to kids, and to award scholarships to college students.

This is not just #BlackHistory, this is #AmericanHistory.

HB 7/SB 148 "Individual Freedoms" or "Stop Woke" Act:
Adults and children alike have the right to learn American History, the good, bad, and ugly. Filtering learnings based on a person's of 'comfort' is offensive to everyone seeking equity. We object to the erasing of the true history of our people.

HB 11/SB 1872 "Impeding, Provoking, or Harassing Law Enforcement Officers":
The murder of George Floyd was captured by Darnella Frazier who provided the needed
documentation to hold the officers accountable for their actions. Everyone has a responsibility to protect each other, even from law enforcement.

HB 1557/SB 1834 "Don't say Gay" Act:
Our children have the right to learn and express their experiences and by limiting topics based on age will increase feelings of alienation and decreases their access to social supports. Data indicates that over 40% of LGBTQ youth have thoughts of harming themselves and often turn to teachers and school personnel for support. Our children deserve multiple outlets to communicate their needs.

#DYK: In the 1940s, psychologists Kenneth and Mamie Clark designed and conducted a series of experiments known as “the doll tests” to study the psychological effects of segregation on African-American children.

The psychologists used four dolls, identical except for color, to test children’s racial perceptions. Children between the ages of three to seven were asked to identify both the race of the dolls and which color doll they prefer. A majority of the children preferred the white doll and assigned positive characteristics to it. The Clarks concluded that “prejudice, discrimination, and segregation” created a feeling of inferiority among African-American children and damaged their self-esteem.

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among Black women. Beginning 2021, The American Cancer Society's estimated as many as 281,550 new cases of invasive breast cancer to be diagnosed in women in the U.S., along with 49,290 new cases of non-invasive (in situ) breast cancer.

The Family Wellness Program at the YWCA has provided health education and prevention services in the community for over 20 years. We provide life-saving breast and cervical cancer screenings, as well as education and services for obesity prevention/reduction, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and stress management/reduction. Today we are highlighting just one of the amazing activists working hard to make a difference, Ayọ Tometi. Before becoming co-founders of the influential Black Lives Matter (BLM) Movement, Tometi was the first woman executive director at the Black Alliance for Just Immigration (BAJI), an organization that helps Black immigrant communities rally behind social and economic justice reform initiatives. Among her many awards and recognitions, she received the 2020 Freedom Flame Award from the Center for Security Policy in recognition of her civil rights service.

Thank you, Ayo, for your amazing work in the community and continuing to be an inspiration to all!

#DYK: Shirley Chisholm became the first African American congresswoman in 1968. Four years later, she ran for the 1972 Democratic nomination for the presidency— becoming the first major-party African-American candidate to do so. Throughout her political career, Chisholm fought for education opportunities and social justice.

An inspiration to us all, our efforts at the YWCA focus to continue the work that Shirley Chisholm and other great leaders began, so that we can build a more equititable future for everyone.

According to the Census Bureau in 2019, the poverty rate for Black Americans was more than double that of White Americans. The poverty rate for Black Americans at 18.8%, compared to 7.3% of White Americans. Although both have trended downward during recent years, there is much more work to do to close the gap and create a sustainable and equitable life for everyone.

Dr. King is generally credited for the all familiar March on Washington in August 1963. However, it was Bayard Rustin (1912 - 1987) who coordinated and planned from the shadows.

As a gay man who had many controverisal connections, he was believed to be too much of a liability to be on the front lines of the movement. Regardlsss, he was considered to be one of the most brilliant minds, and served his community tirelessly while pushing for more jobs and better wages.
