MLK Day of Service

What is it?
Every year on the third Monday of January, our nation recognizes the holiday known as Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in honor of the historical black rights activist. It’s a federal holiday meant to encourage all Americans to use this as “a day on, not a day off” and volunteer in their communities.
In honor of the Day of Service, YWCA South Florida is hosting this year’s event on Saturday, January 16 at our Marta Sutton Weeks Center, instead of the usual Monday so that more of our friends and families are able to attend.
What is YWCA South Florida doing this year?
We are using the month of January to talk about Economic Justice – how women and people of color are disproportionately affected by the national economy. We are kicking off this campaign by inviting our friends and families to join us for a day of learning and activating.
In partnership with United Way Miami-Dade, join us as we learn about the ALICE population and what it’s like to live a day in their shoes, as the make life and financial decisions based on their economic status. Then we are encouraging guests to make a yard sign, explaining what they pledge to do in this effort until we see justice in economics.
After the event, we will be posting these signs around the community to raise awareness and to showcase what we are committing to do in order to push for a fair and just system for us all.

We hope to see you there!
